SOMETHING ABOUT THAT
WORD!
Phillip & Dorothy Pierson
We recently heard that our dear friend of the past, Connie Haines, had made her transition. As some of you may know she was a lead singer for Tommy Dorsey along with Frank Sinatra way back in the 40’s. She was asked to sing by five different US Presidents in the White House. She studied to be a Unity minister in the 70’s and when she was ordained asked if she could come and be a part of our staff in Sacramento. She contributed much to our ministry and to getting us on television. When we think of Connie we always think of her favorite song “There’s Just Something About That Name.” A song she sang passionately and moved the audience every time.
All of that is to lead up to the fact that as we think about Thanksgiving this year we find ourselves thinking of that song. Only instead of being about that name, Jesus, it came out the word “Thanksgiving!” There is just something about that word “Thanksgiving!” It goes like this: To think is the very essence of being human. So what does it mean to think? The derivation of the word is the word “thanc” or to thank. And the root derivation of that word is “to remember!” We have reminded ourselves about that in regard to thinking, but it is equally powerful in regard to the word “thank.” To give thanks is to remember that we have received a gift in some form. In that light there is indeed something very special about that word, thanks!”
Every time we give thanks we are
really releasing the power of remembering. What is that power?
It is bringing the event into power of “the now.” It is to single out an
event or experience and take it from being a part of the stream of happenings,
and holding it for a moment in the “present” or the “now.” It is to release the
full power of our being into the consciousness of giving thanks.
If we are thinking about such gifts as our life, the beauty of nature, our health we give thanks to God as the Source of these gifts. In that moment of sincere thanks-giving we remember and step into the space of being fully in the “Now” of God’s Presence. If we are thinking about someone who has just held a door open for us at a restaurant (that happens often for us) we are thanking them and for a moment entering into a “Now” moment which releases the power of our consciousness into their lives. To practice thanks-giving is to practice giving the power of ourselves to our benefactor.
As you get into the spirit of this, you can see that a life of thanks-giving is a life of putting yourself into the “Now” constantly and giving the full power of your being to every moment of your life. To live with a thankful heart is to create an energy flow that is a blessing to all you touch. It also has the effect of expanding the possibilities of receiving more because you activate the universe around you into a desire to give more of itself. It works that way with people. When people feel thanked they are inspired to do more for you and for the world in general.
Join us this Thanksgiving in knowing “there is something about that word” and loving what it is! Happy Thanksgiving!
WHAT’S GOING ON IN THERE?
Phillip Pierson
We live in a world of information – it is called the Information Age. Not only is there a super abundance of information on every subject you can imagine, but there are a growing list of ways in which you can access that information. The whole thing is amazing and at the same time it is confusing and mind boggling. You are reminded often in ads on television and radio that you need to know what is going on “or else.” That is, you are going to be left out – life is going to pass you by.
There is an old Christian adage that asks the question “what would Jesus do?” Have you ever applied that to this subject of information overload? I have and it is very hard for me to see Jesus glued to a cell phone, the internet, the television set or the radio. I know there are many who would say that this is because I am out of touch and Jesus would be like all the young people today using technology to know what is “going on.” I was moved to write this article, however, because I know I am not wrong. Jesus would not be a “techie” but would be the person who is centered within himself rather than in the world’s intellectual babble.
Part of my feeling about what Jesus’ response would be is based on my own experience. I have found that most of the success that I have experienced in life was not a result of my intellectual awareness, but rather it was willingness to believe that God was present in my life with a desire and willingness to guide me to my highest good. The only demand made upon me for this kind of help was taking time to love and appreciate the reality of that God Presence. There was, of course, a need to trust the God guidance more than any intellectual input. This takes a kind of discipline that is more demanding than that of gathering information and facts. It is a life time commitment!
The answer to overload is to trust the Truth that I have just shared. It does not make you necessarily at odds with the age of information and its high tech methods of communication. It just means that you do not feel the need to measure your abilities and future on the basis of how much information gathering you do. You need do only that which interests you and when it fits comfortably into your life. There is no sense of pressure!
Have you even noticed when someone is using their cell phone that they begin their conversation with “what’s going on?” I have heard this phrase used over and over. It seems to be a descriptive word for what so much of our use of technology and intellect is all about – “what’s going on in your life or what‘s going on out there in the world?” It’s a natural question for the inquiring intellect of humankind. There is so much we don’t know about “what’s going on out there” that it is easy to feel overwhelmed by it.
When you turn that question around and ask “what’s going on in there?” you have yourself going in the right direction. What if all that energy that went into “what’s going on out there?” went into asking sincerely “what’s going on in there?” We would find that the question used in that manner leads not to a sense of overwhelming information, but a feeling of having made contact with a center of calm and simplicity.
What’s going on inside of you is the most important information you could possibly seek to understand. How has God conceived you? What are the components of your being? How do they function and how do you turn them on? How can you stay in touch with God’s love, God’s guidance system, God’s plan for you? This information is the real stuff of the future for you and collectively for humanity. So, when you hear someone on their cell phone saying “ what’s going on?” let it be a reminder to you that the real question for all of us is “what’s going on in there?”
DON’T LET UP!
During the recent elections we often heard the call not to let up in our desire to cast our vote and to encourage others to do the same. Well, the election is over, but the call not to let up must continue. Our call has been for all of us to pray for the right outworking for our nation. We must continue to make that commitment for those who were elected. They may or may not be those you voted for. Our prayer intention is above personalities and parties. Our prayer intention is for the well-being and good of our nation!
“The best is yet to be” for the United States! We are a young
nation compared to nations and empires of the past. We will continue to mature
and find our way in fulfilling the spiritual role that the United States has to
play in the spiritual evolution of the earth. So, don’t let up! Blessed be
this nation and those who presently lead us. Thank you, God!
THOUGHTS ON CONSCIOUSNESS
In the summer edition of the “Journal of Scientific Exploration” there is an article that gives us five properties of consciousness that according to Dr. Dean Radin are testable experimentally. We felt you would be interested in knowing of them and appreciating that they are good guidelines for us all. They are:
Consciousness extends beyond the individual and has quantum field-like properties, in that it affects probabilities of events.
Consciousness injects order into systems in proportion to the “strength” of consciousness present.
The strength of consciousness in an individual fluctuates from moment to moment, and is regulated by focus of attention. Some states of consciousness have higher focus than others. Ordinary awareness has a fairly low focus of attention compared to peak states, mystical states and other non-ordinary states.
A group of individuals can be said to have “group consciousness.” Group consciousness strengthens when the group’s attention is focused on a common object or event, and this creates coherence among the group.
Physical systems of all kinds respond to a consciousness field by becoming more ordered. The stronger or more coherent a consciousness field, the more order will be evident.
There are so many points involved in these statements that support our teachings and the words of Jesus. The best is yet to be!

DID YOU KNOW?
More than 8,000 varieties of the rose have been developed for garden cultivation, yet all of them are descended from a mere handful of wild species. Roses have been cultivated for almost 5000 years and were known to the Persians, Greeks and Romans, but until the end of the 18th century only four or five species were grown. They included the dog rose, musk rose and red Provins rose which became the emblem of the Lancastrians during the 15th-century Wars of the Roses in Britain. The white rose of York was probably a form of dog rose.
Modern varieties, such as hybrid tea roses and floribundas began to be bred only around 1900, after the European species were crossed with cultivated oriental species imported from China.

KEEPING CLOSE
IN PRAYER
Dorothy Pierson
It is such a joy to be here at the very heart of Silent Unity! I am in my office that looks out across the grounds to the beautiful Silent Unity building. This place radiates stability and a peace that holds me steady. Let’s join hands and walk out across the campus. This is a beautiful time of the year as we know . . . the trees are many shades of gold and red, and the grass has been greener than I can ever remember it to be! We have had so much rain this past summer that the flower beds are still bright and beautiful for November! As we walk along we are blessed by a wonderful blue sky with white clouds that seem to be enjoying the beauty too! Phil and I go around the grounds just to give thanks that in our world today this is a place of prayer and peace.
In Silent Unity prayer is continuous night and day reaching around the world. I love thinking about how we pray with people and never see their faces! Our prayer connection is heart to heart and mind to mind. As beautiful as our world is on the outside, how eternally beautiful it is within the heart of all humanity.
Let me share with you some thoughts that spoke in me that seem to fit as we enjoy the beauty of God’s Presence and as we walk together!
“I see myself as a spiritual being.
I am spiritually endowed with everything I will ever need for my eternal ongoing;
I lack nothing.
I live in a universe of life, love, substance, and intelligence. My purpose in being is to release the life, love, substance, and intelligence of Spirit within me.
I rejoice in the “possessions” of my life, but I am not possessed by them.
I rejoice in the people in my life, but I do not bind or hold them to me possessively.
I rejoice in the experiences of my life, but I do not look back and long for the past.
I live today enriched by experience of the past, but free in the eternal now!
I hold no grudges.
I do not use the word “blame.”
I am a spiritual being, capable and strong in accepting the responsibility of my own person.
In the realization of my spiritual self I find my oneness with my Christ within.
I am inwardly guided, outwardly protected.
I walk the way of this earth doing that which is mine to do.
I am not possessed by anyone or anything.
I am free in the warm, healing, loving realization that I am a child of God.”
(From Together A Celebration of Truth, Page 45 – A Booklet by Dorothy Pierson)
God blesses us as we keep close in Prayer! Let us walk every day hand in hand, one in heart and mind. There is only one Presence and one Power, God the Good Omnipotent!
Much love, Dorothy
THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY!
When I came to Unity School I was educated in Silent Unity. Letters came to Unity asking for prayer support. One day a letter came across my desk that seemed to me impossible to answer! The person writing was involved in so much confusion. I didn’t know how in the world I could answer it! I took the letter to a teacher and as I handed it to her to read, I said, “This letter is hopeless!” She took the letter and held it between her hands as she looked at me steadily, “Dorothy, there is always a way!” This has been a confident word that has blessed me in the ministry over and over. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life!” There is always an answer, always a way, when we turn to the Spirit of God! Always . . . . Dorothy
LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH
AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME
Thank you, dear God! The love, law, and order of your Presence holds us as we stand steady in our faith! Our sincere prayer is centered in the quieting love of a universal plan of good for the entire world. “Be still and know that I Am God,” the beautiful 46th Psalm assures us. Turn to it in your Bible and let it bless you! Let this time of Thanksgiving mean more to you than ever before!
LETTERS TO SHARE
Dear Phil and Dorothy: “Just a note to let you know that I am praying with you. What a wonderful testimony for God’s goodness with the “Goodland Angel” in your lives. Thank you for sharing! Gratitude is so important.”
E. J. Greenfield, MA.
Dear Dorothy and Phil: “Bless you both for proving once again the goodness of others and the blessings of living in Divine Trust. Everything in the October Newsletter reaffirmed what I have tried to hold to in these times of turmoil. God is in charge and no matter how it looks, all is unfolding as it should for the highest and best outcome for all of us and our beautiful earth. I live in Divine Trust that this is so! I am at peace.”

STUDYING IDEAS OF UNITY WITH CATHERINE PONDER
In her new and updated Edition
“OPEN YOUR MIND TO RECEIVE”
As we open to Chapter 2 we read, “You have many gifts you may not have used because you were unaware you had them. One of your greatest gifts is that of release. The mystic Moses knew about this gift and asked his followers to use it for their prosperity in a certain way. Every seventh year was a ‘year of release.’ (Deuteronomy 15:9) That was a time when each creditor refrained from enforcing payment of that which was owed him. Every seventh year the Hebrews literally forgave all debts . . . . Your own gift of release is available on the mental, emotional and physical planes of life. As you use it often, you will find that instead of impoverishing you, the act of release will enrich your life far beyond anything you could have conceived!”
As we forgive and let go, we find the wealth of freedom. It is a law. “Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.” (Our Lord’s Prayer) We are thankful for this Truth! And we bless Catherine for her wisdom in this book!
We are blessed as we study! .... Dorothy
